JAMAICA 🇯🇲 IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

December 2024

This is your sign to head to Jamaica 🇯🇲 & warm up this winter!

Jamaica is open for business, and travelers can make a real difference by being intentional about how—and where—they spend their money.

Here are 5 meaningful ways to support local businesses when visiting Jamaica:

1. Get off the resort

This is the single most important step—and honestly the only way to fully do everything below. While resorts have their place, leaving the property allows your travel dollars to reach local families, entrepreneurs, and communities who depend directly on tourism. You can book excursions and tours at your resort but request local tour operators. Also, ask trustworthy friends and travel advisors (me) for companies that support locals.

2. Eat at locally owned restaurants and food stalls

Visit neighborhood cookshops, roadside jerk stands, bakeries, and family-run restaurants. These meals not only showcase authentic Jamaican cuisine, but they also directly support small business owners rather than large hotel groups. Trust me when I say the roadside food is delicious! Ask your tour guide to stop at their favorite ones. For jerk food go to Scotchie's! There are several on the island.

3. Shop from local artisans and vendors

Jamaicans are very excited about the cruise ships being back. Support locals by buying souvenirs from craft markets, street vendors, and small shops selling handmade items such as wood carvings, jewelry, straw goods, spices, artwork, and coffee. This keeps money circulating locally and helps preserve traditional craftsmanship. Yes I know entering these markets often leads to being harassed to buy things. But based on what has happened with the hurricane, support when you can even if you don't need any goods.

4. Book tours and experiences with local guides

Expanding on what is mentioned above, choose locally owned excursions—cultural tours, food tours, music experiences, nature outings, or historical walks. Local guides provide deeper insight into Jamaican culture and history while ensuring tourism income stays in the community.

5. Tip well—and tip generously

Be generous when tipping local workers and guides. Pay at resorts is not high, and many people rely on these jobs to support their families. During resort closures, many workers went months without pay. Local vendors—especially those near cruise ports—have been anxiously awaiting visitors to earn income again.

Traveling with intention not only enriches your experience but also supports Jamaica’s people, culture, and long-term economic recovery.

In 2010—before TikTok, before Instagram, before the iconic flowing dresses in Santorini—I was simply a girl who loved to travel and made her way to Greece 🇬🇷 With no Google Maps and limited internet, it was pure adventure. I spent 10 days exploring Athens, Delphi, Santorini, and Mykonos, completely in awe of the history, the views, and that unreal blue of the Aegean Sea. The Acropolis glowing over Athens at night, sunsets in Santorini that are NOT overrated, and cliffside views from volcanic...
