Luxury Train Journeys Around the World 🚊🌎✨

Imagine waking up in a beautifully appointed cabin and opening the curtains to see the Peruvian Andes, the South African countryside or the European Alps passing by your window.

Luxury train travel is more than transportation. These journeys combine elegant accommodations, destination-inspired dining, attentive service and unforgettable scenery into a boutique hotel experience on rails.

Here are several epic luxury train journeys worth adding to your travel list.

Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

The legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is known for its restored Art Deco carriages, formal dinners, impeccable service and old-world glamour.

The classic Venice-to-Paris route is typically a two-day, one-night journey. The train also operates between cities such as Paris, Venice, Amsterdam, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Rome and Florence. Longer signature journeys may travel as far as Istanbul.

Historic Cabins accommodate one or two guests and have a private washbasin, but toilets are shared and there are no showers. Suites and Grand Suites have private bathrooms with showers and toilets.

Guests enjoy multi-course meals in the train’s restaurant cars, followed by cocktails and live music in the piano bar. Shorter journeys focus primarily on the onboard experience, while longer routes may include hotel stays and destination stops.

This is the journey for travelers looking for romance, glamour and a truly memorable celebration.

Hiram Bingham to Machu Picchu

The Hiram Bingham is Belmond’s luxury train between the Cusco area and Machu Picchu.

This is not a sleeper train. Instead, it is a full-day experience featuring elegant dining, cocktails, live music and panoramic views of the Sacred Valley.

Depending on the package selected, the journey may include transportation to the station, brunch aboard the train, bus transportation to Machu Picchu, a guided visit, afternoon tea and dinner during the return trip.

The Hiram Bingham is an excellent option for travelers who want to make their journey to Machu Picchu as memorable as the destination itself.

Andean Explorer

The Andean Explorer is South America’s first luxury sleeper train. It travels through the dramatic Peruvian Andes between Cusco, Lake Titicaca and Arequipa.

Journeys generally range from two days and one night to three days and two nights.

The train offers several cabin categories, including bunk-bed cabins, twin cabins and larger suites. Cabins include private en-suite bathrooms with showers, toilets and washbasins.

Meals are served in elegant restaurant cars, while the observation car offers cocktails and panoramic views. Depending on the itinerary, guests may visit Lake Titicaca, the Uros Islands, archaeological sites and scenic viewpoints.

This train is ideal for travelers who want to experience Peru slowly while enjoying beautiful scenery, regional cuisine and cultural excursions.

The Blue Train

South Africa’s Blue Train travels between Pretoria and Cape Town. The journey generally lasts three days and two nights and covers approximately 1,600 kilometers.

All suites have private bathrooms. Accommodations range from Deluxe Suites to larger Luxury Suites, with either a shower or bathtub depending on the cabin.

Meals, afternoon tea, onboard beverages and butler service are generally included. The route normally includes an off-train visit to Kimberley to see the Big Hole and Diamond Mine Museum.

The Blue Train is a wonderful introduction to overnight luxury rail travel in South Africa.Rovos Rail

The Rovos Rail

The Rovos Rail offers an extensive collection of luxury train journeys throughout Southern Africa.

Routes may connect Cape Town, Pretoria, Durban, Victoria Falls, Namibia and Dar es Salaam. Journeys range from a few nights to approximately two weeks, depending on the itinerary.

All suites accommodate one or two guests and include private bathrooms. The largest Royal Suites also feature Victorian-style bathtubs.

Meals, onboard beverages and scheduled excursions are generally included. Depending on the route, travelers may visit historic towns, national parks, game reserves, wineries or iconic destinations such as Victoria Falls.

Rovos Rail is ideal for travelers who want to combine luxury train travel with safaris, history, wine regions and multiple African destinations.
